09.11.2010
During the four days of the 20th to the 23rd of October, 5 workshops were taught in Shanghai by Professors from Tartu University, Tallinn University, Estonian Academy of Art and Tallinn University of Technology.
The Animation workshop that was lead by one of the best animators of the world, Professor Priit Pärn, took place at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST). Students saw Priit Pärn’s new films, as well as, had the possibility to try the sand animation film making technique, assisted by the animator Olga Pärn.
The Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Semiotics, as well as the Film Making workshops were held in the Estonian Pavilion at Shanghai EXPO. The VIP area of the pavilion, which is not open to regular visitors, was turned into a real university ambient – two fully technology and computer equipped classrooms were provided.
The Cyber Security students had the possibility to see how common programming mistakes lead to vulnerability, and learned how to fix such mistakes. Film workshop students created their own EXPO films, spending the whole day with their cameras within the EXPO area. All professors from Estonia valued this great experience of sharing information and ideas with young Chinese people in their fields.
Altogether, more than 100 students from USST, Shanghai University, Tongji University, Fudan University, East China Normal University as well as from Nanjing Art University were taking part in the these workshops held by Estonian universities.
The workshops were free of charge for students, including the entrance tickets to the EXPO2010. The goal of the workshops was to create links between the universities of these two countries – China and Estonia – and to introduce Estonian high quality higher education. From each workshop the best student was selected and invited to Estonia with his or her leading professor. The one–week visit is planned for spring 2011. Chinese students will visit Estonian universities, meet students and professors. Accommodation and travel tickets will be covered by Estonia.
